Young Artist Spotlight – Li Yichen (10 years old)

Li yichen

Little young artist

Though he’s only 10 years old, Li Yichen already understands that great artistry is the result of discipline, focus, and dedication to his craft.

He first began painting at the young age of 3 and a small cohort of his friends. He immediately connected with the art form, and even as his friends discontinued their studies one by one, Li maintained his commitment.

He’s a devoted art student, attending watercolor lessons every Friday afternoon and sketching on Saturday mornings. Though he enjoys both, watercolor is his preferred medium as it provides him with a rich, creative space to tell visual stories and express powerful themes like those in his signature painting, “The Little Squirrel In The Wild”.

The Little Squirrel In The Wild

In the painting, which Li completed at age 7, we see a richly textured and detailed squirrel, its body decorated with various signs and symbols, like question marks, sunshine, and buildings.

Li used this symbolism to communicate the squirrel’s natural curiosity about the city around it, showing his empathy and concern for wildlife.  “The Little Squirrel In The Wild” certainly makes for an eye-catching phone case, but the bold painting also doubles as a heartfelt statement about the importance of the animals all around us.

Since he began painting, Li has completed more than 100 paintings, boosting his creative confidence and helping him connect with many friends.

What sets his work apart is his sensitivity to color, which his instructor Mr. Wang said he understands at a deep level.  The young artist effortlessly mixes colors to bring his envisioned palette to life.

When he isn’t painting, Li enjoys playing basketball.  But as his impressive output suggests, he has the passion and perseverance to establish a long, fruitful career in the arts.
